There’s no way to get entirely outside of morality except by death or psychopathology.

Perhaps what people conceive as skepticism about morality as such is really skepticism about particular moral values or principles (or particular conceptions of morality). This, however, is a very different matter. It is raised from within, rather than outside, the moral point of view. Certain moral requirements or principles are subjected to doubt, on the basis of other, presumably more justifiable, moral requirements or principles. We may, for example, come to question traditional views about a doctor’s duty to preserve and prolong life in the light of new circumstances and principles requiring respect for patient autonomy and reducing pain and suffering. The question, then, is not whether we ought to take morality seriously, but whether we ought to take this or that moral value or principle seriously. Skepticism about one moral requirement is based, in part, on commitment to others.
